In home care includes any professional support services that allow a person to live safely in their home. In-home care services can help someone who is aging and needs home care assistance to live independently; is managing chronic health issues; is recovering from a medical setback; or has special needs or a disability. There are three types of in home care services, often confused.
Non-medical home care
Non-medical home care, the most common, provides help with daily activities such as dressing and bathing, assistance with managing tasks around the house and companionship.
Private duty nursing
Private duty nursing care provides long term, hourly nursing care at home for adults with a chronic illness, injury, or disability.
Home health
Home Health care offers short-term, physician-directed care such as physical or occupational therapy designed to help a patient prevent or recover from an illness, injury, or hospital stay.
How much does in home care cost?
Non-medical in home care is usually paid out of pocket and can run anywhere from $30-35 dollars/hour through a home care agency. Private duty nursing and home health may be covered by Medicare or your private insurance.
