Options for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Communities

There are a number of different types of memory care communities. Sarah discusses them here.

Alzheimer’s and Memory Care communities can be broken into three general categories: dedicated memory care communities, assisted living communities with memory care wings, and specialty board and care homes.

Silverado, Avantgarde Senior Living and Welbrook Senior Living are examples of dedicated memory care communities serving the needs of people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. 100% of their resources are spent serving clients with memory impairment. Sunrise Senior Living and Belmont Village are a few of the larger, well-run operators with memory care units. They cater largely to an assisted living clientele but have growing secured memory care wings within the properties. A client who may have only mild cognitive impairment can begin by living in the regular assisted living quarters and transition to the secured floors as their impairment progresses to a point that they need closer supervision and a smaller living environment.

Belmont has a special program called Circle of Friends that allows individuals with early to mid-stage cognitive impairment to live within the main assisted living environment and receive greater oversight and programming specially designed to promote cognitive health. Belmont Village Hollywood Hills has an especially strong Circle of Friends program.

Board and Cares are small residential homes usually licensed for six beds. B&C’s cater to a more fragile population needing close supervision and assistance. Many individuals with mid to late stage Alzheimer’s or other dementia find comfort living in these small residences where a high staff to resident ratio guarantees round-the-clock attentive care. There are many board and care homes in the LA area. Picking the right one is a task that should be guided by an expert.
